Prof. Dr. Pedro Mota Veiga: Why Should Leaders Embrace the Strategy of Calm in Business?
Latest updates from SMK
We live in an age defined by constant change — wars, pandemics, artificial intelligence, and social upheavals continue to reshape our lives almost daily. In this whirlwind of uncertainty, how do we stay grounded? How do organizations adapt when even the most stable systems begin to shake?
On November 13, SMK College of Applied Sciences will host the 5th Annual Symposium — science and research conference invites everyone, both in person and online, from scholars and researchers to business leaders and students, to join the discussion. This year’s Symposium seeks to address one of the most pressing questions of our time: how mindfulness can serve as a strategic response to instability.
The main focus this year is on “Navigating Volatility with Mindfulness: From Individual Practices to Organizational Strategies,” the conference will bring together experts from across the globe to share insights and research. Among the distinguished speakers is Associate Prof. Dr. Pedro Mota Veiga from Portugal, who will give a presentation titled “Mindfulness in VUCA Environments: What We Know and What We Still Need to Learn.”
Mindfulness – A Tool for Modern Leadership
Prof. Veiga’s presentation will focus on how mindfulness can help individuals and organizations navigate environments defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The key insight is that mindfulness is not merely a personal wellness practice; it is a strategic and cognitive capability that enhances decision-making, adaptability, and innovation in complex settings.
“I conducted a systematic literature review covering studies from 2002 to 2025, and my findings show that mindfulness enhances attention regulation, emotional balance, and collective learning,” says Prof. Veiga. “I also discovered a strong connection between mindfulness and dynamic capabilities — demonstrating that a mindful mindset enables organizations to identify new opportunities. My presentation shows that mindfulness helps individuals and leaders turn volatility into vision, uncertainty into clarity, complexity into learning, and ambiguity into creativity. And this is essential!”
Finding Calm and Clarity Amid Digital Chaos
During the conference, Prof. Veiga will highlight the growing importance of mindfulness in the digital era, where artificial intelligence and rapid technological change are reshaping the modern workplace. He explains that a “mindful employee” is not just calm, but “aware, adaptable, and committed to continuous learning”. While digital innovation and AI bring great opportunities, they also increase pressure and mental overload. “Mindfulness helps employees stay focused and balanced amid constant digital noise,” Prof. Veiga notes. He emphasizes developing mindful digital habits — such as taking short breaks, listening actively, and reflecting on lessons learned — as practical strategies to remain grounded in fast-paced environments.
Prof. Veiga notes that several European companies are already piloting mindfulness initiatives to enhance well-being and drive innovation. However, he emphasizes that more research is needed to fully understand the long-term impact of these practices: “The rise of digital mindfulness — how to maintain presence and empathy in AI-mediated contexts — remains underexplored. We also need standardized tools to assess mindfulness not only at the individual level but also within teams and organizations.” Through his insights, Prof. Veiga encourages both researchers and practitioners to view mindfulness as a vital skill for staying human, aware, and adaptable in an age increasingly shaped by machines.
Lithuanian Scholars Strengthens Their Global Research Footprint
Now in its fifth year, the Symposium at SMK College of Applied Sciences has become a tradition that brings together scholars, researchers, and business leaders from across the world to discuss contemporary challenges and innovations. The event stands as a clear testament to SMK’s growing academic strength and its steady integration into the international research community. In recent years, SMK’s scientific activity has gained remarkable momentum — expanding global partnerships, increasing the number of co-authored publications, and maintaining a strong focus on upholding the highest standards of research quality.
In 2025 alone, the number of SMK publications indexed in major international databases such as “Scopus” and “Web of Science” grew by an impressive 50 percent — from 16 to 31. This year, SMK is also collaborating with the renowned publisher “Springer” on the upcoming book “Working Sustainability: Rethinking Work in a Changing World”, while SMK researchers have contributed to the collective volume “Tourism and Heritage: Shaping Sustainable and Innovative Futures”. Additionally, SMK initiated the international research network “European Alliance of Orthorexia Nervosa (EAON)”, which now connects 29 scholars from 13 countries across fields ranging from nutrition and psychiatry to psychology and public health.
