The postpartum period is an important stage in a woman’s life, characterized by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. After childbirth, women adapt to new responsibilities, changes in their daily routine, and the needs of their newborn. Although motherhood is often associated with feelings of joy, love, and closeness to the baby, women may also experience insecurity, fear, emotional exhaustion, and increased anxiety.
One of the most common emotional difficulties during the postpartum period is postpartum anxiety. It may appear as constant worry about the baby’s health and safety, tension, insomnia, increased emotional sensitivity, irritability, or intrusive thoughts. In some cases, women may also experience physical symptoms such as heart palpitations or shortness of breath. However, these symptoms may remain unnoticed because they are sometimes considered a natural part of adapting to motherhood.
Sleep quality is another important factor related to women’s emotional well-being after childbirth. Newborn care, frequent night-time feeding, and repeated awakenings often make sleep fragmented and reduce the amount of uninterrupted rest. Prolonged sleep deprivation may increase fatigue, emotional sensitivity, irritability, and difficulties in coping with everyday stress. Research discussed in the study indicates that poor sleep quality is associated with greater intensity of postpartum anxiety symptoms.
The relationship between sleep and emotional health highlights the importance of comprehensive postpartum care. Early recognition of emotional difficulties, assessment of sleep quality, family support, and timely psychological assistance may contribute to better adaptation to motherhood. Healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, have an important role in observing women’s emotional well-being, identifying signs of anxiety and sleep disturbances, providing information, and offering emotional support.
The aim of this scientific study is to analyse the relationship between sleep quality and postpartum anxiety and to reveal the role of nurses and other healthcare professionals in improving women’s emotional well-being during the postpartum period.
