More Than Just Studies: Embracing Life and Learning at SMK

What does it mean to take a bold step into a completely new world—both culturally and geographically—in pursuit of your dream profession? Esther Kehinde Alao, a General Practice Nursing student from Nigeria, shares her personal journey of studying at SMK College of Applied Sciences in Lithuania. In this interview, she talks about her first impressions of Lithuania, the welcoming and diverse academic environment at SMK, and how cultural differences turned into meaningful discoveries. Why did you choose to study at SMK and in Lithuania?
I chose to study at SMK because it offered exactly what I was looking for—a General Practice Nursing program taught in English and strong support for international students. After googling the school and seeing what it looked like, I really liked it and felt it would be a good fit.

What has your experience at SMK been like?
My experience at SMK has been pleasant so far. Integrating into both the school and the city’s lifestyle was relatively easy, even as a newcomer to Lithuania. In my first year, I appreciated how diversity and inclusion were encouraged, especially through ISN’s coordination of cultural evenings and other social activities. These events really helped me settle into life in “my new city.”

It was fascinating to hear stories from different countries and cultures. Of course, there were some cultural shocks—like dogs in sweaters and strollers, the infamous Lithuanian curiosity stare, and the very unpredictable weather (haha)—but these are all things you quickly learn to live with and even enjoy.

Lithuanian culture is rich and deeply rooted in history. I was especially intrigued to learn that the language has Indo-European origins. As someone who values culture, I truly appreciate being surrounded by people who are also culturally aware.

The quality of education is good, and most of the lecturers I’ve had were easy-going, approachable, and each had their own unique teaching style.

Why would you recommend studying at SMK?
I would recommend studying at SMK because the teachers are genuinely committed to teaching—if you're willing to learn, they are more than willing to help. The school also offers great opportunities, such as Erasmus+ exchanges. The academic system is easy to navigate, and teachers and department heads are accessible and open to communication.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying at SMK?
I’d encourage them to come with an open mind and experience the school for themselves. There are diverse communities ready to support them in integrating into both the school and city life. They’ll have access to all the support and opportunities that SMK offers.
